We’re HABPE to Help—Protecting Water, Empowering People.

Who Is HABPE? Meet NC State’s Student Org Tackling Harmful Algal Blooms

HABPE (Harmful Algal Blooms, People, & the Environment) is a student organization at NC State University dedicated to raising awareness about harmful algal blooms (HABs) across North Carolina’s waters. We’re a cross-disciplinary team of students working to make environmental science more accessible and inclusive—especially for communities most impacted by coastal water quality issues.

Our Mission

We aim to bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding by:

  • Translating HAB research into accessible, community-friendly resources
  • Hosting outreach events that center inclusion and equity
  • Partnering with researchers, environmental justice advocates, and coastal communities

We believe that public health and environmental safety go hand in hand—and that students have a powerful role to play in shaping a more informed and just response to environmental risk.

Who We Are

HABPE is a student-led group made up of undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty partners. We’re in partnership with the North Carolina Center of Coastal Algae People and the Environment (NC-CCAPE).

We welcome new members who are curious about:

  • Water quality
  • Science communication
  • Community-based outreach

All NC State students are welcome to join—no science background required!

What We Do

We’re growing our reach through:

  • Creative outreach materials like stickers, coasters, signage, and zines
  • Public awareness campaigns and community events
  • Collaborations with researchers and coastal stakeholders
  • Student-led projects that connect research to real-world impacts

Whether you’re interested in leading, learning, or just lending a hand, there’s a place for you in HABPE.
